History - The city of Australia has a Proclamation
Day. The date is December 28. The city was founded
as a new British province on December 28, 1836.
The first Surveyor-General of South Australia,
Colonel William Light surveyed and laid-out the area
that would become Adelaide.
It was positioned on the River Torrens, which was great for the city. It grew and prospered and the river became its early water supply.
It was the center of free immigrants. The city promised
freedom of religion and civil liberties. In German
the word Adelaide means 'Noble Birth' and that is
what Adelaide really was. In older cities there was
a need to add good roads and parks to the city. The
City of Adelaide already had that
from the beginning and the city prospered quickly
attracting a large population to the area. Adelaide
is the capital of South Australia .
Adelaide thrives on manufacturing
and research. It is the home to the major military
research institution DSTO
(the Defence Science and Technology Organisation)
and many car manufacturers make their home for their
plants there, including General Motors Holden and
Mitsubishi. Currently the city is under tight spending
budget contraints making up for huge levels of state
debt in the past. This has curtailed the growth fo
the city for the time being. In the future Adelaide
will progress even further when those problems are
The city now is a fantastic tourist spot and people
from all of the world travel to the area. The city
has a population of 1,072,585. It is the fifth largest
city in Australia. Adelaideans are
what the people that live in the area or originate
from the area are called. They would never call any
other place their home. After you visit the area you
will see why they love being a part of all the wonderful
things this city has to offer.
